Why Symi is one of my favourite islands
Symi is a fascinating gem in the Dodecanese islands of Greece and it is renowned for its picturesque harbour, vibrant neoclassical architecture, and magnificent beaches.
Getting there
By Ferry: Symi is accessible by ferry from Rhodes (1.5 hours) or Kos.
There are also connections from Athens’ Piraeus port, though the journey is much longer (around 20 hours).
The nearest airport is on Rhodes. From there, you can take a taxi to the harbour and catch a ferry to Symi.

Best time to visit
Late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
July and August are scorching hot, prices are much higher and the island becomes crowded with tourists.

How to explore the island
Usually we hire a car and drive around to explore what the places have to offer without relying on tours and with much more freedom to see and stop where we like.
Symi, however, is different.
There is only one major road from Gialos harbour to Panormitis and most of the beaches have to be reached by boat.
Fear not! There are plenty of water taxis, at fixed times and at reasonable prices, to ferry you back and forth from the harbour to your chosen beach.
Really there is no need to hire a car.
Explore Gialos Harbour
Admire the colourful neoclassical mansions and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
The island’s main town is a charming maze of narrow streets, colourful houses, and quaint shops.

Climb Kali Strata
This historic stone staircase connects Gialos to the old town of Chorio. Wander through the cobbled streets and stop for a sunset drink and/or dinner at Haritomeni with incredible views!

Visit Panormitis Monastery
A significant religious site with beautiful architecture, located on the southwestern coast.
To reach the Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis, you have several options:
By Bus: A local bus service operates between Gialos (the main harbour) and Panormitis. The bus schedule varies, so it’s best to check the timings at the bus stop in Gialos.
By Taxi: Taxis are available on the island, but they can be more expensive than other options.
Car or Scooter: Renting a vehicle is a convenient way to explore the island, including Panormitis.
By Boat: Some day excursion boats include a stop at Panormitis as part of their itinerary.

We took the bus which was cheap and comfortable. Leaves from the south side of the harbour, near Pantelis restaurant.

Relax on the Beaches and Take a Boat Tour
Explore hidden coves and beaches accessible only by water taxis; not only you will discover stunning coves with crystal clear water but you will get a boat tour too!
There are plenty of water taxis to ferry you back and forth from the beaches. You will see them at the harbour, you can’t miss them.
My favourite beach was Agia Marina, it is a stunning cove and the emerald colour of the water will blow you away!

After Agia Marina, the boats stop at Saint George’s beach and Nanou beach, with a final stop at Marathounta beach and its lovely goats!
They are super friendly, but mind your food! They will find it and munch it even if hidden in your bag!
We ended up sharing, they were too cute!

My other favourite beach, and it was so charming I swore to buy a house there, is Pedi beach easily reached by bus from Gialos.
It is a magical village on the sea, with super cute houses and a few restaurants.

On the other side of Gialos, you can reach Emporios beach, another super charming village which will steal your heart.

Savour Local Cuisine
Try traditional Greek dishes at waterfront tavernas and chill with a glass of wine, watching the world go by.

Symi is an enchanting island and I am not surprised I have left part of my heart there!
Who knows, maybe one day I’ll win the lottery and really buy a house there!
