Why Ilha Grande should be on your travel list

On the stunning Costa Verde in Brazil lies Ilha Grande, a breathtaking island that feels like a slice of paradise.

Lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and vibrant marine life, this tropical haven is a must-visit for any traveller seeking adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both.

Getting There

Accessing Ilha Grande is part of the adventure!

The most common route is to take a ferry from the quaint coastal town of Angra dos Reis or from Conceição de Jacareí.

As you sail across the turquoise waters, you’re greeted by panoramic views of the surrounding islands, setting the stage for the beauty that awaits you.

Ilha Grande Abrao

There are multiple shared or private transfers from Rio, starting at around £25 one way; it takes between 3 to 4 hours but it is certainly worth it!

We actually left from Paraty (see separate post) and took a private transfer organized by the Ilha Grande hotel which also included a private boat transfer. So check with the hotel as well to see what option suits you better.

 Where to stay

Once you arrive, you’ll find that Ilha Grande is largely untouched by modern development. The island is car free and roads are mostly not existent. You need to rely on boats to move around, so choose your area and hotel carefully.

Ilha Grande Abrao

The main village, Abraão, is a charming blend of colourful houses, beachfront restaurants, several hotels and local shops. Here, you can unwind with a fresh coconut drink while soaking up the laid-back atmosphere.

There are other villages on the island that offer beautiful accommodation along with beautiful beaches; it is really up to you whether you want seclusion or a little more lively stay.

We stayed at Praia de Palmas on the nearly untouched northern coast at a hotel with breathtaking views

Perched on top of a hill, you reach the hotel only by boat and the beach via a path in the forest (unlit at night, bring a torch or your phone). Although beautiful, I would not recommend this hotel to people with mobility issues.

The beach is stunning and lined with a few low key bars and local restaurants, nothing fancy, just enough to eat and have a good time. Do not expect clubs or beach parties.

Two trails from the beach bring you to other secluded empty beaches.

What to do

Ilha Grande is car-free, which means you can truly escape from it all. Don’t forget to bring comfortable shoes and a sense of adventure!

Ilha Grande offers an abundance of hiking trails that lead to breathtaking viewpoints and hidden waterfalls. One of the most popular hikes is the trek to Lopes Mendes Beach, often hailed as one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil.

The soft white sand and crystal-clear waters are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and even surfing on a good day.

Snorkelling and diving are popular activities, with vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life just waiting to be explored.

You can join a guided tour or rent equipment to discover the underwater wonders at spots like Lagoa Azul and Praia de Japariz.

If you prefer to stay above water, consider taking a boat tour around the island. Many tours include stops at secluded beaches, allowing you to bask in the sun and enjoy a picnic amidst stunning scenery.

Don’t miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. Visit the island’s historical sites, like the old prison ruins, which tell the story of Ilha Grande’s past.

Engage with the friendly locals, who are always eager to share their knowledge of the island and its traditions.

As the sun sets, the island transforms. Enjoy a leisurely dinner in one of the beachfront restaurants, where the sound of the waves creates the perfect backdrop for a memorable evening.

Savour local specialities like moqueca (a fish stew or the veg option) and caipirinhas made with fresh fruits.

Experience this beautiful island before it becomes over-developed!

Mel’s biography

Ciao, my name is Mel, I am Italian but moved to Ireland several years ago, on a lovely odd summer month. Since that was a trick, and has rained ever since, to keep my sanity I travel as much as I can, because this world deserves to be seen. I have a degree in Languages and Ancient History, therefore I am passionate about learning new languages (5 and counting) and a very keen history buff, and I love photography and I am vegetarian. We like to carry around cat dry food, on our travels, to feed as many animals as we can.
37 countries visited so far, some even more than twice, but my bucket list is not getting any shorter!
