Exploring the charm of Sibiu
Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, Sibiu is a picturesque city that boasts a rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning architecture.
Once the European Capital of Culture in 2007, this enchanting destination offers travellers a delightful blend of medieval charm and modern facilities. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or an outdoor enthusiast, Sibiu has something to captivate every visitor.

We reached it by train from Brasov but can be reached easily from Bucharest and has an international airport which connects directly with a few European cities, making it a perfect destination for a spring weekeend.
A Stroll Through History
Start your journey in the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you’ll be greeted by colourful buildings and cobblestone streets.
The iconic Brukenthal Palace, home to Romania’s first museum, showcases an impressive collection of art, while the Council Tower offers panoramic views of the city’s skyline.

Don’t miss the Great Square (Piața Mare), a bustling hub filled with cafes, shops, and the stunning Evangelical Cathedral, a true testament to Sibiu’s medieval past.
And the houses with windows that look like eyes!
Don’t miss the famous Bridge of Lies and its legends; one legend says that the bridge will collapse if someone tells a lie while crossing it; although we were tempted to try, we refrained!

Another legend says that, being the bridge a popular hub of merchants, those caught to lie and cheat were thrown off it.
Another one says that it was a meeting of lovers and often hearts were broken with lies.
In reality, the bridge takes its name from Liegenbrücke, German for lying bridge (lying as in “to lie down”), which sounds very similar to Lügenbrücke, meaning “bridge of lies”.

Food stuff
Sibiu is not just about stunning sights; it’s also a haven for food lovers. The city offers an array of traditional Romanian cuisine that will tantalize your taste buds. Make sure to try “sarmale” (cabbage rolls) and “mămăligă” (cornmeal porridge) at a local restaurant. For dessert, indulge in “cozonac,” a sweet bread filled with nuts and cocoa—perfect for those with a sweet tooth.
For nature enthusiasts, Sibiu is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes waiting to be explored. Just a short drive from the city, the Făgăraș Mountains offer fantastic hiking trails, with routes suitable for all skill levels.

Sibiu is alive with culture throughout the year, hosting numerous festivals that attract visitors from all over the world. The Sibiu International Theatre Festival and the Christmas Market are just two highlights of the city’s vibrant calendar. Join the locals in celebrating their traditions, and you’ll leave with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for Romanian culture.
With its unique blend of history, culture, and stunning landscapes, Sibiu is an enchanting destination that promises to leave a lasting impression. Whether you’re wandering through its charming streets, savouring local delicacies, or immersing yourself in its rich traditions, you’ll find that Sibiu is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your travel itinerary. Pack your bags and get ready to explore the wonders of Sibiu—you won’t regret it!
