Discover Syros: The Heartbeat of the Cyclades
When one says Cyclades, the mind thinks of Mykonos or Santorini. Yet, less known Syros is actually the capital of the Cyclades, a unique blend of Cycladic charm and Venetian elegance.
We visited in early July 2021, just after lockdown, and it was blissfully quiet but still lively enough to get us into the holiday mood.
Syros is one of my favourite Greek escapes.
Brief history
Archaeological evidence suggests that Syros was inhabited as early as the 3rd millennium BC. During the Classical era, Syros was part of the Athenian Alliance and later came under Macedonian rule.
The Venetians established Ano Syros in the 13th century, a medieval settlement that still retains its charm. The island also became a refuge for Catholics during this time.
Syros thrived as a major trade and cultural hub in the 19th century, particularly in Ermoupoli, the capital city dedicated to Hermes, God of trade among others jobs, which became a centre of commerce and neoclassical architecture.

Getting There
- By Ferry: Syros is well-connected to Athens (Piraeus port) and other Cycladic islands like Mykonos, Paros, and Tinos. Ferries operate year-round.
- By Plane: A short flight from Athens to Syros Island National Airport is also an option.

What not to miss
Ermoupoli
Ermoupoli, also known as Hermoupolis, is a captivating town on the island of Syros in the Cyclades, Greece. It serves as the capital of both the island and the South Aegean region. The town is renowned for its stunning neoclassical architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and historical significance.

Founded during the Greek Revolution in the 1820s, Ermoupoli quickly became a major commercial and industrial hub in Greece. Its name, meaning “City of Hermes,” reflects its historical importance in trade and shipping. The town boasts landmarks like the Miaouli Square, the grand Town Hall designed by Ernst Ziller, and the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas.

Ermoupoli’s unique charm lies in its Venetian influences, pastel-colored buildings, and lively harbor. It’s a blend of historical grandeur and modern vibrancy, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the Cyclades.

Ano Syros
Ano Syros, or “Upper Syros,” is a charming medieval settlement perched on a hill above Ermoupoli on the island of Syros. Established during the Venetian era in the 13th century, it exudes a unique blend of Byzantine, Venetian, and Cycladic influences.
The town is a maze of narrow, winding alleys, whitewashed houses, and colourful doors, creating a picturesque and labyrinthine atmosphere. At its heart lies the Catholic Church of Saint George, a historic landmark dating back to around 1200. The Capuchin Monastery, founded in 1637, is another notable site.

Ano Syros offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and Ermoupoli below.
It’s a short but steep walk from Ermoupoli, or you can take a taxi to explore this enchanting village.

Beaches
Syros is home to a variety of beautiful beaches, each offering something unique. Here are some highlights:
- Galissas Beach: One of the most popular beaches on the island, Galissas features fine sand, shallow waters, and a family-friendly atmosphere. It’s perfect for swimming and relaxing, with nearby tavernas and water sports options.
- Kini Beach: Located in a charming seaside village, Kini Beach is known for its clear waters, fine sand, and excellent seafood tavernas. It’s also a great spot to catch a stunning sunset.
- Agathopes Beach: A sandy beach with shallow waters, Agathopes is ideal for families. It offers organized facilities and nearby dining options, along with beautiful views.
- Delfini Beach: A quieter option compared to Kini, Delfini Beach is perfect for those seeking a more relaxed and less crowded experience.
